The first generation Golf GTI was unveiled in 1976. Credited with being one of the first hot hatchbacks, the Mk1 GTI married performance, usability, and value to create a dominating package. Featuring an updated fuel injected engine, the Mk1 GTI saw an increase in performance from the standard Mk1 Golf, as well as improvements to the chassis that gave the car a sportier feel. The GTI is easily distinguished by the red piping around the front grill, as well as added wheel arches and a larger front spoiler. Although production of the standard Mk1 GTI lasted until 1984, the Cabriolet version remained in production untl 1993.
